Whilst the focus for most people is on their face, the neck is also an area that will show the effects of sun damage and skin ageing and can benefit from many of the skin rejuvenation treatments applicable to the face. The neck is actually quite vulnerable to sun damage as people whilst they might use sunscreen on the face often forget the neck. In addition, there are also a number of concerns particular to the neck that develop as we get older and can be effectively treated non-surgically. These include Double Chins, thickening of the muscles at the front of the neck (Platysmal bands) and a particular skin condition where there is mixture of redness and pigmentation at the sides of the neck (Poikiloderma).
Different approaches are needed for different concerns:
They are commonly seen as thickened vertical muscle cords at the front of the neck. The platysma is a muscle that gives support at the front of the neck, however, as the effects of ageing progress the platysmal muscle can deteriorate and result in the formation of thickened vertical muscle cords at the front of the neck, so-called platysmal bands. These bands often extend from the jawline down to the collarbone. Non-surgical treatments are best suited for patients with thick bands and a thin neck.
Significant photodamage is commonly seen on the neck as it is often neglected from sun protection. The outer part of the neck can appear mottled with red and brown discolouration. This can form a horseshoe shape with sparing under the chin (which is in shadow and protected from the sun) and may extend down onto the chest. This is called Poikiloderma. It can be slow to respond to treatment and a series of both vascular and pigment lasers may be needed.
