Ageing Skin

Treatments for redness, pigmentation, wrinkling and cell damage.

As the body ages, so does the skin, but because the skin is exposed to the environment, it can often age at a faster rate than the rest of the body. When this accelerated skin ageing occurs, it’s referred to as premature ageing.

About the condition

Skin ageing is the result of the interplay of internal factors such as genetics and hormones with external factors such as sun, wind, your diet, and smoking.

As the skin ages several changes occur:

  • Pigmentation: Pigment cells (melanocytes) in the epidermis increase in number and form clusters especially in sun exposed areas and brown spots (lentigines) develop. Very common on the face and backs of hands and are commonly called age or liver spots.
  • Redness: Blood vessels in the dermal layer open up (dilate) especially on the nose and cheeks. Often called ‘broken’ capillaries or when larger ‘spider’ veins.
  • Dryness: Older skin has fewer sweat glands and oil glands and dryness and roughness become common.
  • Thinning: The rate of cell production in the epidermis slows down and this layer thins and the dermal layer also thins from collagen and elastin damage resulting in thin and crepey skin.
  • Wrinkling: Repeated muscle contractions over many years combined with loss of collagen and elastin results in lines and wrinkles appearing especially in areas with lots of movement such as around the eyes and mouth.
  • Sagging: The combination of less support for the skin, through reduced collagen and elastin production, shrinkage of facial fat pads and the effects of gravity the skin starts to sag and droop.
Ageing Skin: About The Condition

How it works

The choice of treatment depends on which signs of ageing are the primary concern and the level of improvement that’s desired. For optimal results in improving ageing skin, it is usually necessary to address several problems. In some situations, they can be combined in one treatment session.

  • Skin redness can be very effectively treated with Vascular lasers.
  • Skin pigmentation often requires a combination approach of skin products, topical treatments, and Pigment laser treatment.
  • Textural changes can be helped by appropriate skincare such as Vitamin A topically and moisturisers. Skin treatments such as Microdermabrasion, Laser peels, Pico toning, and Infini skin needling can all be beneficial in the right circumstances.
  • Wrinkles and lines can be treated with injectable treatments such as Anti-wrinkle injections and Dermal fillers, and also with the Infini device (a combination of fractional micro-needling with radio frequency energy).
  • Skin dysplasia and pre-cancers can be spot treated with liquid nitrogen or excision. Large areas can be treated with prescription creams or Photodynamic therapy (PDT). A topical amino acid is applied as a cream to make the skin photosensitive, and then a light source is used to destroy the abnormal cells.
  • Photorejuvenation is a general term for the use of light-based technologies to make the skin appear more youthful. Light devices include lasers, Intense Pulse Light (IPL), and Light Emitting Diodes (LED).

Skin is returned to a more youthful appearance and health. Pre-cancerous skin conditions are treated before they progress to more severe forms or cause damage to the skin.
