Your skin’s needs evolve over time, and a professional approach can help maintain a youthful, healthy complexion at every stage of life. Here’s a decade-by-decade guide to medical-grade skincare and non-surgical treatments.
In Your 20s: Protection and Hydration
Focus: Your 20’s are the perfect time to develop good skincare habits. We recommend establishing a simple and straightforward routine with a focus on protection and prevention.
Skincare Recommendations:
- Protect your skin daily with a minimum 30+ SPF. Over-exposure to UVA and UVB rays can lead to accelerated aging, sundamage, and increased risk of skin cancers. We love the Airyday Dreamscreens and La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible Zinc for keeping your skin protected all year round.
- Gentle cleansers and hydrating serums are great for preventing skin dehydration and keeping the skin barrier healthy. Hyaluronic acid is one of our favourite hydrating ingredients and we love the HA3 Serum by Dermaenergy. This abundantly hydrating serum saturates dry and dehydrated skin with an innovative blend of three types of hyaluronic acid and is designed to boost the skin’s moisture content, to reveal an instantly plumped and hydrated glow.
- Gentle exfoliation 2-3 times a week is recommended. For most skin concerns we prefer acid based exfoliants over physical scrubs. For anyone experiencing pesky breakouts, or bumpy skin texture, we love the Dissolve & Solve Toner by Dermaenergy. This treatment in a bottle instantly smooths the skin and dissolves blockages for a clearer and calmer complexion.
In-Clinic Treatments:
- Skin peels, Hydrodermabrasion or Powerpeels may be recommended for deep cleaning, exfoliation and hydration. These treatments offer instant results with no discomfort and can be tailored to suit your individual skin needs.
In Your 30s: Early Prevention and Intervention
Focus: Prevent against oxidative damage and begin to target early signs of aging with gentle, collagen stimulating treatments.
Medical-Grade Skincare:
- In addition to your daily SPF, antioxidants such as Vitamin C, can be introduced to protect against free-radical damage, and collagen breakdown. The C2 Serum by Dermaenergy contains two types of vitamin C, plus 9 other powerful actives such as niacinamide, resveratrol and ferulic acid to help strengthen the skins elasticity, repair signs of ageing and deliver a radiant complexion.
In-Clinic Treatments:
- Laser Genesis or Dermastamp Microneedling are great introductory treatments which can help address redness, superficial acne scarring, skin texture and fine lines.
- Combination treatments may also be option for the right candidate. Combining treatments is an excellent way to enhance your results and target multiple skin concerns at the same time. Some of our favorite treatment combinations include Laser Peels—a blend of microdermabrasion; laser genesis or revlite laser, and skin peels. This combination refines skin texture, stimulates collagen production, and helps even out skin tone. We also love combining laser genesis with skin needling for an extra collagen boost.
In Your 40s: Stimulate and Repair
Focus: Addressing volume loss, fine lines, and superficial sundamage.
Medical-Grade Skincare:
- Exfoliating acids, often referred to as AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acids), offer a range of benefits for your skin, such as, improved skin texture and brightness, better product penetration and improvement of fine lines. Some AHAs, like lactic acid, also have hydrating properties, which draw moisture into the skin and leave it feeling plump and nourished. The LQD Serum by Dermaenergy contains a gentle blend of AHAs and BHA’s which work to improve cell turnover and promote long-term clarity, smoothness and youthfulness.
- Retinol serums may also be recommended if you are starting to experience the first signs of aging such as fine lines, uneven skin texture and sundamage. We love the Propaira Ret + Cream for beginners or the A3 Serum by Dermaengery for more experienced users.
In-Clinic Treatments:
- Laser or broad-band light (BBL) treatments can target and remove the visible signs of ageing and sun damaged skin, as well as treat skin conditions, such as Rosacea. BBL treatments also provide gentle collagen stimulation and improve overall skin health. Add on TCA skin peel for further improvements in texture, fine lines and sundamage.
- The eyes are one of the first areas to show signs of aging. The Tixel treatment is one of ours favourites for targeting this delicate and normally hard to treat area. Tixel uses high heat with a short pulse duration, which creates tiny, microscopic channels within the treated area. The heat that is transferred to the skin stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which helps tighten and smooth the skin over time.
- Dermal Fillers may also be a suitable option for patients concerned with the first signs of volume loss
In Your 50’s 60s and Beyond: Restoring Volume, Lifting & Rejuvenation
Focus: Enhancing skin elasticity and hydration, while supporting structural changes
Medical-Grade Skincare:
- Richer formulations for increased hydration are generally recommended. Our patients love the Revive Medium moisturiser by Dermaenergy for providing essential hydration in the morning or evening. The K Ceutic 50+ cream is also a favourite. This deeply nourishing cream is great for dry or dehydrated skins and offers 50+ protection against UVA and UVB rays.
- Stronger retinoids or prescription formulations may be considered if tolerated. Retinoids are a type of Vitamin A that help with skin renewal by speeding up the process of skin cell turnover. In addition, retinoids increase collagen synthesis by upregulating the activity of fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin within the skin. This helps to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and strengthen the skin’s overall structure.
In-Clinic Treatments:
- Advanced laser and Radiofrequency (RF) treatments to tighten and smooth are great as standalone treatments but may also be used in combination with some Bio-stimulating injectables for enhanced results.
- Genius RF Microneedling is a clinic favourite for tightening the skin and improving fine lines and wrinkles. The Genius RF device delivers radiofrequency energy into the deeper layers of the skin through a unique micro needling system. The combination of needling and heat stimulates collagen production and expertly targets skin laxity, wrinkles and uneven skin texture.
- Fraxel Laser is a popular treatment that is perfect for addressing texture and pigmentation. At Collins Cosmetic Clinic we use the Fraxel Dual Laser system which utilises two different wavelengths for different skin concerns. The 1927nm wavelength targets the superficial layers of the skin to remove pigmentation and sundamage and improve fine lines and skin texture. The 1550nm wavelength penetrates deeper within the skin and can help to improve acne scars, wrinkles and deep pigmentation
- Gentle hydrating treatments such as skin peels and LED may also be beneficial to help maintain and improve overall skin health and hydration.
The Takeaway
Each decade comes with unique skin challenges, but a professional approach ensures your skin stays healthy and radiant. Regular consultations with a cosmetic medical clinic can help create a personalised plan that evolves with you.
